  • Newell Barnard's Ingenuity and Saginaw's Boatbuilding Heydey

    Record Run Mural

Boats long plied the waters of the Saginaw River and its tributaries, carrying people and goods from one village to another, but when boats with gasoline engines were introduced in the early 1900’s, interest in recreational boating soared.

    Wah-Wah-Sum Mural

It may be hard to imagine now, but before football, baseball and hockey became national pastimes, rowing was "second to that of no sport in the country," said the Detroit Free Press in 1870.  Indeed, rowing captured headlines across the country.

110-112 N. Michigan Exterior Before and After

The Backstory: About Peter C. Andre and His Buildings

Although the exact date of construction is unknown, the building at 110-112 N. Michigan Avenue is identified on the 1877 Saginaw plat map, another of P. C. Andre's projects.

The first floor has always had two retail spaces, divided by a staircase leading to the second floor which originally had two apartments.

    Saginaw 1851

Peter C. AndreLike all cities, Saginaw's story is the story of the people who shaped it and who are still shaping it today.  Among them was Peter C. Andre, an early pioneer who served as Mayor from 1863-1865 and again in 1883 - and who left his mark that is still visible today.

  • The Gallery's Green Roof

    Gallery Roof

Atop The Gallery is a carpet of plants, otherwise known as a green, or living, roof.  Why?

We happen to believe that it is incumbent upon us all to do our bit, in whatever way we can, to reduce the human impact on climate change and to reduce the pressure on local infrastructure. Green roofs can help. How?

  • The Story Behind The Gallery Name And Its Mural

    Mural Gallery

We’re often asked where The Gallery got its name.  The answer is simple:  “The Gallery” seemed fitting because public art was part of the development approval process. But with no parameters of what public art should look like, our only vague conception in those early days of development was that it should represent something about Ann Arbor.

And in those early days, people began to express interest in the building, including Barbara Murphy and Gavin Eadie who has given me to permission to share this story.  (Otherwise, we don’t divulge our buyer’s names.)

  • Pocket Offices: Big Uses for Small Spaces

    Pocket Office

As the demand to maximize square footage has increased, pocket offices have become a big trend in new home design.

Pocket offices are compact spaces that are ideal for managing household affairs or for working from home, and they're great places for plugging in computers, iPads and cell phones.

Otherwise - unless a spare bedroom is available to convert to a home office - bills can pile up on the kitchen counter and all our electronics are plugged in wherever we can find a spot. Pocket offices are the solution for managing this "clutter" that we all have.
