American Made Products For Building, Remodeling or Redecorating Your Home

What better way to celebrate America than by using American made products for building, remodeling or redecorating your home?!

We’ve assembled a whole list for you! It came about when, during the Great Recession, a consulting company estimated that 200,000 jobs would be created if every builder in America would use just 5% more American made materials.

We decided to do our part to keep Americans working by taking a close look at the products we were using.  With the help of our suppliers, we found that the vast majority of materials and products we’d always used were American made.  And the small minority that wasn’t? Where possible, we replaced them with U.S. made products.

In 2012, our effort made its way into the national news – on ABC’S World News Tonight with David Muir and Diane Sawyer (5:32 segment) – and locally in the Ann Arbor News.

But much more important than the attention was our pride in playing a small role in contributing to local and national economies.

Today - from lumber to nails to roofing to paint - the products we use to build our homes are manufactured in 36 states.  Many - right here in Michigan.

The only products we can't find manufactured in the U.S. are microwaves and recessed lights.  And in this global economy, we can’t guarantee that some small parts of some products are American made, but we believe we are as close to using 100% American made products as possible.

And speaking of global economy, buying American made products often depends on where they're bought.  That's because some products are manufactured overseas to meet price points for specific retailers.

Take, for example, plumbing fixtures and faucets.  Those that are manufactured overseas may look the same as those manufactured in the U.S., but what components have changed to make them a few bucks cheaper?  Did plastic replace brass?

When made with good components, any product will stand up better to daily use and provide more years of dependable service. It's that simple.

You're much more likely to find American made plumbing fixtures at plumbing suppliers like Ferguson's.  Delta even has an online list of its products that meet the Buy American Act.

Whether you’re building a new home, remodeling your existing one, or doing a home improvement project, it's an investment.  At the same time, why not invest in America?
